How to choose diamond for diamond tools

When choosing diamond to make diamond tools, the following aspects need to be considered:

Selection of diamond particle size: When the diamond particle size is coarse and single particle size, the saw blade tip is sharp and the cutting efficiency is high, but the bending strength of diamond agglomerates decreases; When the diamond grain size is fine or mixed with coarse and fine grain sizes, the durability of the saw blade head is high, but the efficiency is low. Taking into account the above factors, a diamond particle size of 50/60 mesh is more suitable.

Selection of diamond distribution concentration: Within a certain range, as the diamond concentration changes from low to high, the sharpness and cutting efficiency of the saw blade gradually decrease, while the service life gradually extends; But if the concentration is too high, the saw blade will become dull. Using low concentration and coarse particle size will improve efficiency. By utilizing the different functions of each part of the blade during sawing, different concentrations are used (i.e. lower concentrations can be used in the middle layer of a three-layer or more structure). During the sawing process, a middle groove is formed on the blade to prevent the saw blade from swinging and improve the quality of stone processing.

The selection of diamond strength: The strength of diamond is an important indicator to ensure cutting performance. Excessive strength will make the crystal difficult to break, and the abrasive particles will be polished during use, resulting in a decrease in sharpness and deterioration of tool performance; When the strength of diamond is insufficient, it is prone to breakage after being impacted, making it difficult to undertake cutting tasks. Therefore, the strength should be selected between 130-140N.

The choice of bonding phase: The performance of the saw blade depends not only on the diamond, but also on the overall performance of the composite material formed by the appropriate combination of diamond and bonding agent. For soft stones such as marble, the mechanical properties of the cutting head are relatively low, and copper based binders can be used. However, copper based binders have low sintering temperature, low strength and hardness, high toughness, and low bonding strength with diamond. When adding tungsten carbide (WC), WC or W2C is used as the skeleton metal, supplemented with an appropriate amount of cobalt to improve strength, hardness, and bonding properties, and a small amount of low melting point, low hardness metals such as Cu, Sn, Zn are added as the bonding phase.

Selection of sintering process: With the increase of temperature, the densification degree of the matrix increases, and the bending strength also increases. Moreover, with the extension of the insulation time, the blank matrix and diamond agglomerates are reduced.
